The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced special waste collection interventions in communities affected by the recent withdrawal of selected Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, as part of efforts to prevent waste accumulation and maintain environmental cleanliness across Lagos State.
The intervention is aimed at bridging gaps in waste collection services and ensuring that residents in the affected areas continue to enjoy essential waste management services despite disruptions caused by the withdrawal of some operators.
The development highlights the state government’s commitment to maintaining a clean, healthy and sustainable environment through prompt responses to challenges affecting waste collection and disposal.
Following the withdrawal of the affected PSP operators, LAWMA has stepped in to provide direct waste collection services in the communities concerned. The initiative is designed to reduce the risk of refuse piling up on roadsides, residential streets and other public spaces.
Waste accumulation can contribute to unpleasant odours, blocked drainage channels and environmental pollution, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. The authority’s intervention is therefore expected to provide relief to residents while efforts are made to address the service gaps.
The special collection exercise also demonstrates the importance of effective coordination between the government and private waste management operators in sustaining sanitation services across the state.
As Lagos continues to experience population growth and increased commercial activities, efficient waste collection remains essential to protecting public health, preserving the environment and improving the quality of life of residents.
LAWMA’s intervention forms part of broader efforts to ensure that waste management services remain functional, even when operational challenges arise within the PSP system.
Residents are also encouraged to support the initiative by disposing of their waste responsibly, avoiding indiscriminate dumping and cooperating with authorised waste collectors.
The authority’s direct intervention is expected to help maintain sanitation standards in the affected communities while efforts continue to ensure the effective delivery of waste collection services.
Through the initiative, the Lagos State Government reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability and the wellbeing of residents, with the aim of ensuring that temporary disruptions do not undermine the state’s sanitation objectives.
