The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has celebrated four young golfers who represented Nigeria at the World Schools Games Golf Championship in St. Andrews, Scotland, following their impressive performances at the international competition.
The young athletes were received by the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu, during a reception held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. The event also provided an opportunity to engage parents and other stakeholders on strategies to promote youth golf development across the state.
The championship, held from September 14 to 16, 2026, brought together young golfers from different countries to compete at St. Andrews, widely recognised as the Home of Golf.
Nigeria made its debut at the competition, marking an important milestone for the development of school golf and the participation of young Nigerian athletes in international sporting events.
Among the outstanding performers was Toluwalashe Balogun of Lagoon Schools, Lekki, who finished as runner-up in the Junior Girls category, demonstrating her potential on the international stage.
Another representative, Tiaraoluwa Ahmadu of St. Saviour’s School, Ikoyi, secured a top-five finish in the same category, further highlighting the talent among young golfers from Lagos State.
Oluwamayomile Orungbeja of St. Gregory’s College also delivered a commendable performance, finishing among the top 10 competitors in the Junior Boys category.
The achievements of the young golfers reflect the growing potential of school-based sports programmes and the importance of providing young athletes with opportunities to compete beyond national borders.
Speaking at the reception, Fatodu received the golfers and recognised their efforts in representing Nigeria at the championship. The engagement also focused on working with parents and stakeholders to identify opportunities for training, support and the long-term growth of golf among young people.
The Lagos State Sports Commission’s recognition of the athletes underscores the importance of nurturing emerging sporting talent and encouraging greater participation in less traditional sports.
The commission’s efforts are expected to support the discovery and development of future champions while strengthening Lagos State’s contribution to Nigeria’s sporting success internationally.
