Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged young Nigerians to develop their skills, participate actively in governance and contribute to national development.
Sanwo-Olu made the call while speaking at the 41st birthday colloquium of Seyi Tinubu, the Okanlomo of Yorubaland, where he emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for young people to thrive and take leadership positions.
The governor commended Seyi Tinubu for bringing young Nigerians together to discuss the country’s future, noting that meaningful development requires collective effort, patience and continuity across generations.
Using Lagos State’s development journey as an example, Sanwo-Olu explained that major projects could take years to materialise, citing the Blue Line rail project, which was first conceived in 1983 and became operational decades later through the efforts of successive administrations.
He said the experience demonstrated the importance of laying strong foundations for future generations to build upon.
Reflecting on his journey from surveying to banking and eventually becoming governor, Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for proper planning before embarking on major projects.
He also recalled how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave young professionals opportunities to contribute to governance when he joined government in his 30s, describing such opportunities as essential to developing future leaders.
The governor encouraged young people to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards, attend community and ward meetings, participate in budget hearings and take an active interest in decisions affecting their lives.
He further advised them to acquire valuable skills, continuously improve their abilities and strive for excellence in their chosen professions.
Sanwo-Olu also urged young Nigerians living abroad to maintain connections with their communities and contribute their knowledge and experience to development at home.
Addressing older generations, he called on leaders to mentor young people, employ emerging talents and create opportunities for them to assume leadership responsibilities.
As his administration approaches the end of its tenure, Sanwo-Olu expressed hope that it would complete ongoing projects, initiate sustainable programmes and leave a strong foundation for future administrations to continue building on.
