Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has charged newly appointed members of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) to take decisive steps toward transforming the electricity sector in Lagos State. He urged the board to implement reforms that would improve power supply, promote transparency, and encourage private investment in the state’s electricity market.
The governor gave the directive while inaugurating the commission’s board, emphasizing the importance of the body in shaping a more efficient and reliable power system for Lagos. According to him, the establishment of the regulatory commission followed the enactment of the Lagos Electricity Law, which empowers the state to regulate electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within its jurisdiction.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the new electricity framework is part of the state government’s broader effort to address longstanding challenges in Nigeria’s power sector. He noted that Lagos, being the commercial hub of the country, requires a stable and sustainable electricity supply to support businesses, industries, and the growing population.
The governor tasked the board members with ensuring that their decisions promote innovation, efficiency, and fairness in the electricity market. He also encouraged them to create policies that would attract investors while protecting the interests of electricity consumers across the state.
Sanwo-Olu further stressed that the commission would play a crucial role in regulating electricity providers, issuing operational licenses, monitoring service quality, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. Through these responsibilities, the government hopes to establish a more competitive electricity market that can deliver improved services to residents and businesses.
He also highlighted the need for collaboration among stakeholders in the energy sector, including private investors, regulators, and distribution companies. According to the governor, such cooperation is necessary to achieve long-term improvements in power supply.
In response, members of the newly inaugurated board pledged their commitment to delivering on the commission’s mandate. They assured the governor that they would work diligently to introduce reforms that would strengthen the electricity sector and contribute to the economic growth of Lagos State.
