THE YOUTH BUREAU COMMENDS SANWO-OLU ON MAY 2026 PUSH FOR DIGITAL SKILLS AND YOUTH EMPLOYMENT, DESCRIBES INITIATIVE AS A TIMELY RESPONSE TO ECONOMIC REALITIES
In a statement issued in Lagos, the Publicity Secretary of the group, Adekunle Adeosun, noted that the current economic climate demands bold and practical interventions that equip young people with relevant, income-generating skills, particularly in the digital and innovation sectors.
According to the Youth Bureau, the recent expansion of youth-focused initiatives — including digital training programmes, entrepreneurship support, and job linkage platforms — shows that the Lagos State Government is not only aware of the challenges facing young people but is actively working to address them with real solutions.
“This is the kind of action young people want to see. Not just policies on paper, but real programmes that give us skills, open doors, and create opportunities. The focus on digital training and employment in May 2026 is exactly what is needed right now,” the statement read.
The group highlighted that the state’s continued investment in digital capacity building is a strong response to the global shift toward technology-driven economies, where skills such as software development, digital marketing, data analysis, and innovation are becoming essential.
It noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub, must lead in preparing its young population for this shift, and the current initiatives reflect a clear understanding of that responsibility.
According to the Youth Bureau, the administration’s approach goes beyond traditional job creation by focusing on employability, innovation, and entrepreneurship — areas that empower young people to not only seek jobs but also create them.
“Jobs are changing. The world is moving fast. What Lagos is doing is preparing young people for that future — a future where skills matter more, where innovation drives growth, and where young people can build their own opportunities,” Adeosun stated.
The group also commended the integration of programmes like the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC) into the broader youth development strategy, noting that innovation funding combined with skills training creates a powerful ecosystem for growth.
It emphasised that when young people are given both knowledge and financial support, they are more likely to succeed, scale their ideas, and contribute meaningfully to the economy.
“This is how you build a generation of problem-solvers. You train them, you support them, and you give them a platform to grow. Lagos is putting these pieces together,” the statement added.
The Youth Bureau further noted that the ripple effects of these initiatives are significant, as they help reduce unemployment, promote self-reliance, and drive economic activity at multiple levels.
It stated that empowered youth contribute to stronger communities, increased innovation, and a more resilient economy overall.
According to Adeosun, one of the most important aspects of the current push is its relevance — addressing real challenges with practical solutions that young people can immediately benefit from.
“This is not abstract development. This is real impact. When a young person learns a digital skill, starts a business, or gets connected to a job opportunity, that is direct progress,” he said.
The group, however, called for continuous expansion and deeper reach, urging the government to ensure that these opportunities extend beyond central urban areas to grassroots communities where many young people remain underserved.
It also emphasised the need for sustained awareness campaigns so that more youths are informed and able to participate in the programmes.
“Opportunities must be visible and accessible. Every young person in Lagos should know what is available and how to benefit from it,” the statement noted.
The Youth Bureau also encouraged young people to take responsibility by actively engaging with available programmes, developing their skills, and positioning themselves to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
“This is a moment for young people to rise. The support is growing, the platforms are expanding — now is the time to learn, build, and take action,” Adeosun added.
The group concluded by reaffirming its support for youth-centered governance and policies that prioritise skills, innovation, and employment.
It expressed confidence that Lagos is on the right path and will continue to set the pace in youth development across Nigeria.
“This is leadership that understands the future. By investing in youth today, Lagos is securing tomorrow. And for young people, this is a clear signal — the opportunities are coming, and the time to step up is now,” the statement concluded.
