Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has emphasized the need for honesty, transparency, and accountability among leaders, describing these values as essential pillars for effective governance and national progress.
Speaking at a church synod in Lagos, the governor stressed that leadership is not merely about occupying positions of authority but about serving the people with integrity and a deep sense of responsibility. He noted that those entrusted with public office must see their roles as a sacred duty, requiring moral discipline and unwavering commitment to the common good.
Sanwo-Olu pointed out that Nigeria is currently facing significant economic and social challenges, making it more important than ever for leaders to act with sincerity and purpose. According to him, the decisions made by those in power directly impact the lives of millions, and any form of dishonesty or lack of accountability can erode public trust and hinder development.
The governor further explained that governance should not be treated as a personal enterprise or an opportunity for self-enrichment. Instead, it should be viewed as a trust given by the people, one that must be managed with fairness, openness, and a focus on delivering tangible benefits to society. He urged leaders at all levels—federal, state, and local—to adopt a people-centered approach that prioritizes transparency in decision-making and accountability in the use of public resources.
In his remarks, Sanwo-Olu also highlighted the role of ethical leadership in building strong institutions. He stated that when leaders demonstrate integrity, it sets a standard for others to follow, creating a culture of responsibility across government and society. This, he said, is critical for fostering sustainable growth and ensuring that public policies achieve their intended outcomes.
The governor called on citizens as well to hold leaders accountable while also supporting initiatives that promote good governance. He emphasized that nation-building is a collective effort that requires both responsible leadership and active civic participation.
Sanwo-Olu’s message resonates amid growing public demand for transparency and improved governance in Nigeria. His call serves as a reminder that trust, once lost, is difficult to rebuild, and that the path to lasting development lies in ethical leadership grounded in honesty and accountability.
