Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed an immediate scale-up of waste evacuation operations across the state following the recent accumulation of refuse in several communities.
The Governor said agencies responsible for environmental sanitation, including the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, have been mobilised to tackle the situation and restore cleanliness across affected areas.
According to Sanwo-Olu, additional trucks, equipment, and personnel have been deployed to support ongoing waste clearance efforts, with teams working round the clock to remove refuse and clear backlogs from streets and neighbourhoods across the state.
He assured residents that noticeable progress is already being made and pledged that the government would sustain the exercise until all affected locations are completely cleared.
“Lagos generates over 13,000 tonnes of waste every day, making waste management a major undertaking that requires significant resources, planning, and coordination,” the Governor stated.
Despite the scale of the challenge, Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, stressing that the government remains fully focused on resolving the current waste management concerns.
The Governor also called on residents to play their part in keeping the state clean by properly bagging and disposing of household waste through approved channels. He warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse on roads, medians, and drainage channels, noting that such practices contribute to environmental degradation and flooding.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised that maintaining a cleaner Lagos requires a collective effort between government agencies and residents. He expressed confidence that with sustained intervention and public cooperation, the state would overcome the current challenges and continue to uphold its status as one of Africa’s leading megacities.
He reiterated that the government is fully on top of the situation and remains committed to ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Lagos for all.
