Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for a more balanced and objective narrative about Africa, emphasizing the continent’s progress, opportunities, and successes alongside its challenges.
The governor made this known following a meeting with Ms. Tighisti Amare, Director of the Africa Programme at Chatham House, in London.
According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the discussion focused on Nigeria’s development from the perspective of Lagos, with both parties examining key economic, social, and political issues shaping the country’s future. He noted that the engagement provided an opportunity to share insights on Nigeria’s current socio-economic realities and the efforts being made to strengthen governance, economic growth, and social development.
The governor also highlighted the recently concluded governorship election in Ekiti State, describing the exercise as peaceful, credible, and reflective of the growing maturity of Nigeria’s democratic institutions. He stressed that the successful conduct of the election demonstrates the commitment of stakeholders to upholding democratic values and ensuring the will of the people is respected.
Sanwo-Olu further underscored the importance of changing global perceptions of Africa by presenting a fuller picture of the continent. While acknowledging existing developmental challenges, he maintained that Africa is home to remarkable achievements, innovation, resilience, and vast economic opportunities that deserve greater international recognition.
He noted that constructive engagements with influential policy and research institutions such as Chatham House are essential for fostering deeper understanding and strengthening partnerships that can support sustainable development across Nigeria and the wider African continent.
The meeting forms part of ongoing efforts to promote meaningful dialogue on governance, economic transformation, and Africa’s evolving role in the global landscape.
