The Lagos State Government has said it has significantly reduced the challenge of multiple taxation through the harmonisation of its revenue collection system, describing the initiative as a major step toward creating a more business-friendly environment.
According to the government, the reform is designed to simplify tax administration, improve transparency and eliminate the burden of overlapping taxes and levies that previously affected businesses and residents across the state.
Officials explained that the harmonised system has streamlined revenue collection by ensuring that taxes and approved levies are collected through a coordinated process. This, they noted, has reduced duplication, enhanced compliance and made it easier for taxpayers to meet their obligations without unnecessary stress.
The government said the initiative aligns with its broader agenda of promoting ease of doing business, encouraging investment and strengthening public confidence in the state’s tax administration. It added that businesses can now operate with greater certainty, knowing that revenue collection is guided by a clear and transparent framework.
Lagos State also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a fair and efficient tax system that supports economic growth while ensuring that government generates the revenue required to provide essential infrastructure and public services.
The administration stressed that the harmonisation process is not intended to increase the tax burden on residents or businesses but rather to remove inefficiencies and ensure that all collections comply with existing laws and regulations.
The state government urged taxpayers to continue fulfilling their civic responsibilities by paying approved taxes through designated channels, assuring them that ongoing reforms will further improve service delivery and accountability.
It reiterated that eliminating multiple taxation remains a key component of its economic development strategy, aimed at fostering a competitive business environment, attracting local and foreign investment, and sustaining Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s leading commercial and financial hub.
