Lagos State and the State of California, United States, have signed a sister state agreement aimed at strengthening collaboration and creating new opportunities for growth, innovation and economic development.
The agreement was signed in Sacramento during a ceremony attended by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and California Assemblyman Matt Haney, who formalised the partnership on behalf of the two sub-national governments.
The historic signing brought together government officials, lawmakers, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community in California. Among those present were Lagos State House of Assembly members Hon. Lukmon Saheed Olumoh, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and Hon. Kehinde Joseph, Chairman of the Public Account Committee.
Also in attendance were California Assemblyman Isaac Bryan, who co-authored the resolution with Haney that paved the way for the partnership, Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and other distinguished guests.
The ceremony was held at the Leland Stanford Mansion, a historic Victorian-era building in Sacramento that has hosted visiting leaders from around the world.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the similarities and complementary strengths between Lagos and California. He noted that both regions are recognised for their vibrant economies, diverse populations and strong innovation ecosystems.
The Governor drew comparisons between California’s Silicon Valley and Lagos’ Yaba technology hub, while also highlighting the relationship between Hollywood and Nigeria’s thriving Nollywood film industry.
Sanwo-Olu said the sister state agreement would provide a platform for deeper cooperation across sectors, including technology, entertainment, transportation, investment and innovation.
The event also featured a cultural display by an Eyo masquerade group, accompanied by traditional talking drums and Yoruba music, showcasing Lagos’ rich cultural heritage.
The partnership is expected to open new avenues for knowledge exchange, investment and collaboration while strengthening the relationship between Lagos and California.
