Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stressed the need for African countries to harness their industrial capacity, emerging technologies and youthful population to accelerate economic growth and strengthen the continent’s position in the global economy.
Sanwo-Olu made the remarks in New York while participating in discussions on Africa’s development and economic prospects hosted by the Aliko Dangote Foundation.
The Governor said the conversations around industrial development, artificial intelligence and the enormous talent of Africa’s young population were closely connected to the development priorities being pursued by his administration in Lagos.
According to him, the issues discussed during the engagement underscored the importance of creating an enabling environment where people, businesses and innovative ideas can flourish.
Sanwo-Olu noted that Lagos’ efforts to expand economic opportunities, strengthen infrastructure and support innovation form part of a broader continental agenda aimed at positioning Africa for sustainable growth.
He said Africa possesses significant human and economic potential, particularly through its youthful population, but stressed the need to provide the necessary platforms and opportunities for young people to develop their skills and compete internationally.
The Governor maintained that governments must continue to create conditions that encourage innovation, entrepreneurship and investment while ensuring that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence are effectively harnessed to address development challenges.
He said the discussions in New York reinforced the importance of connecting local development initiatives with broader global conversations about Africa’s economic future.
Sanwo-Olu added that Lagos would continue to pursue policies and initiatives aimed at empowering residents, supporting businesses and creating opportunities for talent to thrive.
He emphasised that Africa’s future growth would depend significantly on its ability to develop its industrial capacity, embrace technological advancement and unlock the potential of its young population.
The Governor said Lagos would remain committed to creating an environment where its people and ideas can grow, innovate and compete on the global stage.
