Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to recognising and celebrating individuals who have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s cultural and creative industries while they are still alive.
The Governor made the statement while reflecting on the recognition given to veteran Nollywood actress, Iya Awero, whose decades-long contribution to the Nigerian entertainment industry have earned her a place among the country’s respected cultural figures.
Sanwo-Olu recalled that in 2021, the Lagos State Government presented the veteran actress with a three-bedroom home in recognition of her remarkable contributions to Nollywood and the development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
According to the Governor, the gesture was part of his administration’s efforts to appreciate individuals who have dedicated their lives and talents to the growth of the creative sector.
He noted that Iya Awero’s reflection on the gesture reinforced the importance of honouring cultural icons during their lifetime, rather than waiting until after their death before acknowledging their contributions.
Sanwo-Olu said people who have invested decades in preserving and promoting Nigerian culture deserve to experience the gratitude and appreciation of society while they are still alive.
He stressed that the contributions of veterans in the creative industry should not be overlooked, noting that their work has helped shape Nigeria’s cultural identity and influenced generations of younger entertainers.
The Governor said his administration would continue to recognise individuals whose efforts have contributed to the growth and development of Lagos and Nigeria, particularly those in the arts, entertainment and cultural sectors.
He added that celebrating such personalities while they are still alive provides an opportunity for society to express genuine appreciation for their sacrifices, achievements and lasting impact.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated that honouring legends remained a priority of his administration, emphasising the need to celebrate their contributions and preserve their legacies for future generations.
