Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has celebrated Nigeria’s first Olympic gold medallist, Chioma Ajunwa Opara, for her historic achievement and lasting contribution to Nigerian sports.
Governor Sanwo-Olu recalled that Ajunwa made history at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, United States, where she won Nigeria’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal in the women’s long jump event.
The Governor noted that her remarkable achievement not only brought honour and pride to Nigeria but also inspired a new generation of athletes and demonstrated the power of determination, discipline and perseverance.
Sanwo-Olu said that 25 years after the historic achievement, the Lagos State Government, under his leadership, fulfilled a promise made to the celebrated athlete by presenting her with the keys to a home.
According to him, fulfilling the promise was more than the presentation of a house; it was an opportunity to recognise and honour a Nigerian who had made an indelible mark on the nation’s history through her outstanding performance on the international stage.
The Governor stressed the importance of celebrating national heroes for their accomplishments and the sacrifices, commitment and dedication that made those achievements possible.
He said Ajunwa’s story remains an inspiring example of what Nigerians can accomplish when they remain focused and committed to excellence despite challenges.
Sanwo-Olu commended the former athlete for her contribution to Nigeria’s sporting history and her role as an inspiration to young people who aspire to represent the country at major international competitions.
He reaffirmed the importance of recognising individuals who have brought honour to Nigeria, noting that their achievements should continue to be remembered and celebrated.
The Governor congratulated Chioma Ajunwa on her historic accomplishment and assured her that her place in Nigerian history remains firmly secured.
He also expressed hope that her legacy would continue to inspire generations of Nigerian athletes to pursue excellence and bring greater glory to the country.
