Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has hosted a Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM), bringing together the Federal Government and key stakeholders in the power sector to address challenges affecting electricity supply across the state.
The retreat focused on developing practical solutions to improve the reliability and sustainability of Lagos’ electricity market and move the state closer to achieving a 24-hour power supply.
Sanwo-Olu welcomed the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, to the meeting, where discussions centred on the challenges confronting electricity generation, transmission and distribution in Lagos, as well as measures required to overcome them.
The Governor disclosed that Lagos requires more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity to adequately meet the needs of its growing population, businesses and industries. He stressed that achieving this demand would require significant investment in embedded and off-grid power generation, improved transmission and distribution infrastructure, as well as an effective regulatory framework tailored to the realities of Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the enactment of the Federal Electricity Act 2023 and the Lagos Electricity Law 2024 had provided the necessary legal framework for the state to take more decisive steps toward addressing bottlenecks in the electricity sector.
He also highlighted the importance of securing a reliable gas supply to support power generation and ensuring that existing infrastructure operates more efficiently.
The Governor appreciated the commitment of Federal Government partners and other stakeholders, including the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Rural Electrification Agency (REA), toward strengthening the electricity market.
He said the ultimate objective of the CLEM initiative was to ensure that the benefits of reforms in the power sector translate into improved electricity supply for residents and businesses.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a cleaner, more reliable and sustainable electricity market capable of supporting Lagos’ economic growth and improving the quality of life of its residents.
