Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has hosted a Ministerial Implementation Retreat on the Clean Lagos Electricity Market (CLEM) at Lagos House, Marina, bringing together Federal Government authorities and key stakeholders to discuss the development of a more reliable and sustainable electricity market for the state.
The high-level meeting focused on strategies to address the persistent challenges affecting electricity generation, transmission and distribution in Lagos, while exploring practical measures to improve power supply for residents, businesses and industries.
The retreat provided an opportunity for the Lagos State Government and Federal Government representatives to review ongoing efforts in the electricity sector and identify areas requiring greater collaboration and investment.
Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub and one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, requires a stable and dependable electricity supply to support its expanding population, commercial activities and industrial development. The CLEM initiative is therefore aimed at strengthening the state’s electricity market and creating an environment that can attract further private-sector investment.
Discussions at the retreat also centred on the need to expand electricity generation through embedded and off-grid solutions, improve transmission and distribution infrastructure, and strengthen regulatory systems to ensure more efficient delivery of power.
The meeting further highlighted the importance of effective collaboration between Lagos and Federal Government institutions responsible for electricity generation, regulation and transmission.
The implementation of the CLEM is expected to complement existing efforts by the state government to reform the electricity sector and explore innovative solutions to the challenges confronting the power market.
The retreat underscores the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to achieving a more dependable electricity supply as part of its broader development agenda for Lagos.
The state government said continued cooperation with Federal Government authorities and other stakeholders remains essential to achieving sustainable improvements in the sector.
The ultimate objective is to ensure that Lagos residents and businesses experience tangible improvements in electricity supply, thereby supporting economic growth, job creation and a better quality of life across the state.
