Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has emphasised the importance of accountability, transparency and responsible financial management in strengthening Nigeria’s economy and securing a better future for its citizens.
Sanwo-Olu made the remarks while speaking at the 56th Annual Accountants Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), held in Abuja.
The governor highlighted the need for public officials and institutions to look beyond financial figures and focus on ensuring that public resources are effectively managed to deliver meaningful improvements in people’s lives.
According to him, genuine progress begins with accountability, which requires honesty, responsibility and prudent management of public funds. He stressed that government expenditure must translate into tangible benefits for citizens through improved infrastructure, healthcare and other essential services.
Sanwo-Olu explained that sound accounting practices and financial discipline have remained important elements of his administration’s planning, investment decisions and project delivery in Lagos State.
He pointed to major infrastructure developments, including the Blue and Red Line rail systems, expanded Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) networks, critical road projects and improvements in healthcare services as examples of how proper financial planning can support development.
The governor noted that these projects reflect the importance of translating government plans into practical outcomes that address the needs of residents and improve their quality of life.
He also acknowledged ICAN for providing a platform for discussions on financial accountability, economic development and responsible resource management.
The conference brought together accounting professionals and other stakeholders to discuss issues affecting the profession and the wider economy, including the role of financial management in promoting sustainable development.
Sanwo-Olu called for continued commitment to transparency and responsible governance, stressing that effective management of public resources remains essential to building public confidence and achieving lasting development.
He urged stakeholders to sustain efforts towards strengthening financial accountability and ensuring that available resources are used efficiently.
