Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Sunday paid glowing tribute to fallen members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing their service to the nation as a sacred calling founded on courage, discipline, and ultimate sacrifice.
The governor made the remarks at the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Thanksgiving Service held at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja. The solemn gathering brought together government officials, military personnel, religious leaders, and members of the public to honour soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty and to reflect on the price paid to sustain peace and security in the country.
Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Sanwo-Olu said the remembrance service was both an act of thanksgiving and a moment of deep reflection. According to him, it provides an opportunity to honour bravery, remember sacrifice, and acknowledge the often unseen cost of peace enjoyed by citizens.
“Today, we gather in the presence of God with hearts full of gratitude, humility, and remembrance. This service is both a thanksgiving and a sacred pause — a moment to honour courage, to remember sacrifice, and to acknowledge the unseen cost of peace,” the governor said.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the freedoms Nigerians enjoy daily are sustained by men and women of the armed forces who remain on constant guard, often at great personal risk. He stressed that many of these heroes paid the ultimate price to protect the nation’s sovereignty and ensure the safety of its people.
The governor urged Nigerians to reflect on the significance of unity, patriotism, and shared responsibility in sustaining peace. He emphasized that national unity strengthens the resolve of the armed forces, while division undermines their efforts and sacrifices.
Sanwo-Olu also called on citizens to support the families of fallen soldiers and to uphold the values of courage, discipline, and selflessness exemplified by the military. He concluded by reaffirming the Lagos State Government’s commitment to honouring the nation’s heroes and promoting peace, unity, and security across the state and the country.
