Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on councillors across the state’s 377 wards to demonstrate courage, empathy and a strong sense of responsibility in the discharge of their legislative and oversight duties.
The governor gave the charge at an onboarding and retreat programme organised for councillors in Lagos State, held at the Novotel Hotel, Lekki. Sanwo-Olu was represented at the event by his Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu.
In his address, the governor emphasised that local government remains the closest tier of governance to the people and plays a critical role in shaping citizens’ perceptions of leadership, democracy and public service. He noted that councillors, as grassroots representatives, carry the responsibility of translating government policies into tangible benefits for their constituents.
Sanwo-Olu urged the councillors to carry out their oversight functions with courage, stressing that effective governance requires the ability to ask critical questions, ensure accountability and act in the best interest of the people at all times. He also encouraged them to approach leadership with empathy, saying understanding the needs, concerns and aspirations of residents is key to responsive and inclusive governance.
According to the governor, laws and resolutions passed at the local government level must be purposeful, people-centred and aligned with the broader development agenda of the state. He advised councillors to prioritise legislation that promotes social welfare, economic growth and sustainable development within their respective wards.
The governor further highlighted the importance of integrity, collaboration and continuous learning in public office, noting that the onboarding and retreat programme was designed to equip councillors with the knowledge and skills required for effective service delivery.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening local government institutions and supporting councillors in their efforts to deepen grassroots development and democratic participation across Lagos State.
