Babajide Sanwo-Olu has said the Light-Up Lagos Project introduced by his administration is improving safety and strengthening security across major roads in the state.
The governor made this known while speaking about the impact of the initiative aimed at installing and restoring streetlights across Lagos. According to him, the project is designed to ensure that roads, highways and public spaces remain well illuminated at night, thereby reducing accidents and discouraging criminal activities.
Sanwo-Olu explained that proper lighting plays a vital role in urban development and public safety. He noted that when roads are well lit, motorists are able to drive more safely, while pedestrians can move around without fear. The governor added that brighter roads also help security agencies monitor activities more effectively and respond quickly to emergencies.
He further stated that the Light-Up Lagos Project is part of his administration’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for residents. The initiative, he said, involves the installation of thousands of streetlights across major highways, bridges and inner roads in different parts of the state.
According to the governor, several areas that were previously dark at night are now properly illuminated due to the ongoing efforts of the state government. He explained that the project also includes the repair of damaged lighting infrastructure and the deployment of modern energy-efficient lighting systems.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the government will continue to expand the programme to more communities, noting that adequate lighting is essential for economic activities that take place at night. Businesses, transport operators and residents, he said, benefit from a safer and more secure environment created by improved street lighting.
The governor also urged residents to support government efforts by protecting public infrastructure and reporting vandalism of streetlights to the relevant authorities.
He reiterated that his administration remains committed to implementing policies and projects that promote safety, boost economic activities and improve the overall living conditions of people across Lagos State.
