Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting the potential of every child, particularly those on the autism spectrum, as the world marks World Autism Awareness Day.
The Governor made this known while reflecting on the remarkable endurance ride from Enugu to Lagos, led by autism advocate Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke. He described the initiative as a powerful symbol of resilience, courage, and the need for greater societal attention to individuals living with autism.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the endurance ride serves as an inspiring reminder that children with autism possess unique abilities that deserve to be seen, nurtured, and celebrated. He noted that such advocacy efforts help to break down stigma, promote inclusion, and encourage communities to create supportive environments where individuals on the spectrum can thrive.
The Governor further stated that World Autism Awareness Day is not only a time for celebration but also an opportunity to renew collective commitment toward improving the lives of people with autism and their caregivers. He stressed the importance of sustained advocacy, access to quality care, and inclusive policies that address the needs of individuals on the spectrum.
Sanwo-Olu also called on stakeholders, including government institutions, private organizations, and civil society groups, to collaborate in building a more inclusive society. He reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to initiatives that promote awareness, early diagnosis, and support systems for families affected by autism.
