In a message marking the June 12 celebration, the governor described the occasion as a significant reminder of the sacrifices made by courageous Nigerians who stood firmly in defence of democracy and the right of citizens to freely choose their leaders.
Sanwo-Olu said June 12 represents the enduring spirit of a people who refused to surrender their democratic aspirations despite challenges and setbacks. According to him, the day symbolizes the triumph of the collective will of Nigerians and the resilience that helped shape the nation’s democratic journey.
The governor paid special tribute to the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola and his wife, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, whose sacrifices became defining moments in Nigeria’s struggle for democratic governance. He also honoured countless activists, civil society groups, and citizens whose dedication and courage contributed to the restoration and preservation of democracy in the country.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for citizens and leaders alike to continue upholding the principles that sustain democracy. He identified respect for one another, active citizenship, transparency, accountability, and collective responsibility as essential values for national development.
The governor further noted that Lagos State’s rich diversity remains one of its greatest assets and called on residents to continue embracing unity, tolerance, and mutual respect in their daily interactions.
He urged Lagosians to work together in building a society where every individual has the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and achieve their full potential, adding that sustained progress can only be achieved through cooperation and a shared commitment to the common good.
