Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed the state’s commitment to tackling climate change through practical solutions and strategic partnerships during the opening reception of London Climate Action Week.
The governor joined the Mayor of London and Co-Chair of C40 Cities, Sir Sadiq Khan, at the event hosted by Goals House in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Wellcome Trust. The gathering brought together policymakers, climate experts, development partners, and global leaders to discuss innovative approaches to addressing climate challenges and promoting sustainable development.
Speaking on the significance of the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the reception as an important platform for engagement, knowledge sharing, and collaboration among cities and institutions committed to climate action. He noted that the discussions provided an opportunity to exchange ideas and strengthen partnerships aimed at developing effective responses to the growing impact of climate change.
According to the governor, Lagos, as one of Africa’s largest coastal megacities, experiences the effects of climate change directly through rising sea levels, flooding, and other environmental pressures. These realities, he said, underscore the need for sustained action and investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable urban development.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the Lagos State Government remains focused on implementing practical measures that not only protect the environment but also support economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents. He stressed that climate action and economic development must go hand in hand to ensure long-term prosperity for the state.
The governor further highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate challenges, noting that cities around the world must work together to share knowledge, attract investment, and develop innovative solutions. He reaffirmed Lagos State’s readiness to collaborate with global partners in building a greener, more resilient, and sustainable future for generations to come.
