Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the demolition of shanties and makeshift structures erected along the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, giving occupants a 72-hour ultimatum to vacate the area before enforcement begins.
The governor announced the directive on Saturday during an inspection tour following the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise held in Surulere Local Government Area.
Sanwo-Olu said the move forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to restore order, improve environmental conditions, and ensure the safety of residents and road users along major transportation corridors in the state. According to him, the illegal structures have contributed to environmental degradation, obstructed the aesthetics of the highway, and raised security concerns.
He stressed that the Lagos-Badagry Expressway remains a critical gateway into the state and should not be occupied by unauthorized settlements or commercial activities. The governor noted that the government has repeatedly warned against the erection of makeshift structures on road medians, setbacks, and other public spaces.
Sanwo-Olu directed relevant government agencies to commence enforcement immediately after the expiration of the 72-hour notice, adding that all affected occupants should relocate their belongings and vacate the area voluntarily.
The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner, safer, and more organized Lagos. He emphasized that environmental sustainability and urban renewal remain central to the state’s development agenda.
While appealing for public cooperation, Sanwo-Olu urged residents to support government initiatives aimed at preserving public infrastructure and protecting the environment. He added that enforcement actions would continue across different parts of the state to tackle environmental infractions and illegal occupations of public spaces.
The governor assured Lagosians that the government would remain steadfast in implementing measures that promote public safety, environmental sanitation, and sustainable urban development.
