Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to addressing waste management challenges and maintaining a cleaner environment across the state.
The governor made this known during an inspection of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Surulere, where he joined residents and officials of the Ministry of the Environment in monitoring cleanup activities across the community.
Sanwo-Olu commended residents for actively participating in the sanitation exercise, describing their efforts as a strong demonstration of civic responsibility. He noted that environmental cleanliness is a collective duty that requires sustained cooperation between government agencies and citizens.
According to the governor, keeping drains clear and streets clean is essential not only for public health but also for preventing flooding, especially during the rainy season. He emphasized that community participation remains a critical component of the state’s environmental sustainability agenda.
Addressing concerns over recent waste disposal challenges in some parts of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu assured residents that the government is taking decisive steps to improve waste collection and management across the state. He disclosed that the administration is expanding waste collection coverage to inner streets and underserved communities while investing in modern waste-processing infrastructure capable of handling thousands of tonnes of refuse daily.
The governor also revealed that the state government is working closely with Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators to address operational constraints affecting efficient waste evacuation. He expressed confidence that ongoing interventions would significantly improve service delivery in the sector.
Sanwo-Olu thanked residents, sanitation workers, and environmental officials who participated in the exercise, stressing that government efforts alone cannot achieve a cleaner Lagos.
He maintained that while the state continues to invest in critical environmental infrastructure, the daily commitment of residents to proper waste disposal and community cleanliness remains vital to building a healthier, safer, and more resilient Lagos.
