Orders Demolition of Illegal Structures intensified efforts to restore environmental sanity across the state, issuing a final warning to occupants of illegal structures and shanties located on the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
The governor announced the directive during an inspection exercise, stressing that the continued occupation of the road median poses environmental, security, and safety risks to residents and road users. He directed relevant government agencies to commence a large-scale demolition and clean-up operation along the corridor beginning on Monday.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the state government can no longer tolerate activities that undermine the cleanliness and aesthetics of Lagos. He described the illegal settlements as a major source of indiscriminate waste disposal, environmental degradation, and obstruction to ongoing infrastructure development within the axis.
The governor noted that the Lagos-Badagry Expressway remains one of the state’s most strategic transport corridors and must be maintained in a manner that reflects the government’s vision of a clean, safe, and modern city. He emphasized that all affected occupants had been adequately notified and given sufficient time to vacate the area before the enforcement exercise.
Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability and urged residents to support government efforts by complying with sanitation regulations. He warned that enforcement actions would be extended to other parts of the state where illegal structures, indiscriminate waste disposal, and environmental violations persist.
The planned demolition and clean-up exercise form part of broader initiatives aimed at improving public health, ensuring free flow of traffic, and enhancing the overall appearance of Lagos. The governor assured residents that the state government would continue to take decisive measures against activities that threaten the environment and hinder the development of Africa’s largest city.
