Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has emphasized the critical role young people play in shaping the economic strength of Lagos, describing them as the driving force behind the state’s rapid growth and innovation.
Speaking at a high-level policy and leadership forum, the governor highlighted that Lagos has increasingly become a hub for youth-led enterprise, creativity, and technological advancement. According to him, a significant proportion of new businesses emerging in the state are founded and managed by young entrepreneurs who are leveraging digital tools, innovation, and resilience to build sustainable ventures.
Sanwo-Olu noted that these youth-driven businesses are not only creating employment opportunities but also contributing significantly to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). He stressed that the economic activities of young people span across various sectors, including technology, entertainment, fashion, agriculture, and financial services, all of which continue to position Lagos as a leading economic center in Africa.
The governor further explained that his administration has deliberately focused on policies and programmes that empower young people with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive. One such initiative is the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, which provides structured training, mentorship, and hands-on experience in governance and public service. Through this programme, participants are equipped to become future leaders capable of driving meaningful change in both public and private sectors.
In addition, Sanwo-Olu pointed to ongoing investments in digital infrastructure, education, and innovation hubs as part of the government’s broader strategy to support youth development. He said these efforts are designed to create an enabling environment where young talents can flourish and transform their ideas into impactful enterprises.
The governor also called on other states and stakeholders across Nigeria to prioritize youth empowerment as a key component of national development. He argued that investing in young people is not merely a social responsibility but a strategic economic decision that yields long-term benefits.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, Sanwo-Olu assured that Lagos will continue to implement policies that support entrepreneurship, job creation, and innovation. He maintained that by harnessing the energy and creativity of its youthful population, Lagos is well-positioned to sustain its status as a dynamic and globally competitive economy.
Ultimately, the governor’s message underscored a clear vision: the future of Lagos lies in its youths, and their continued growth will remain central to the state’s economic success.
