Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has intensified efforts to position Lagos as a leading destination for global investment, using an international platform in London to showcase the state’s economic potential. Speaking at the Commonwealth Trade and Investment Summit, the governor called on global investors and partner nations to channel more capital into Africa, with Lagos presented as a strategic entry point.
In his address, Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, noting that the state contributes a significant share to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. He explained that Lagos, if considered independently, would rank among the largest economies in sub-Saharan Africa. This positioning, he said, makes the state uniquely attractive for investors seeking high-growth markets with strong urban demand and expanding infrastructure.
The governor stressed that Lagos is not only relying on its existing economic strength but is also implementing forward-looking policies designed to sustain long-term growth. Key among these are ongoing investments in transport infrastructure, including rail systems aimed at improving mobility across the city. He also referenced upgrades in port facilities and digital infrastructure, which are expected to enhance trade efficiency and support the growing technology ecosystem in the state.
Sanwo-Olu further pointed to Africa’s demographic advantage, noting projections that the continent’s population will account for a significant portion of the global workforce by 2050. According to him, this trend presents vast opportunities for investors willing to engage early with rapidly expanding markets like Lagos.
As part of this broader investment push, the governor announced plans for the upcoming “Invest in Lagos 3.0” summit, scheduled to hold in June 2026. The event is expected to bring together policymakers, investors, and business leaders from around the world. Unlike traditional conferences, the summit is designed to facilitate real transactions and partnerships, offering investors direct access to viable projects within the state.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment through regulatory reforms and strategic planning under the THEMES+ development agenda. He assured stakeholders that Lagos remains open to partnerships that will drive innovation, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.
Overall, the governor’s engagement in London underscores a deliberate strategy to elevate Lagos’ global profile and attract the level of investment needed to sustain its position as Africa’s economic powerhouse.
