Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for approving Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project, describing the decision as a major milestone in the state’s ongoing transportation transformation.
Speaking on behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, the governor said the approval reflects a strong commitment by the Federal Government to support strategic infrastructure that will significantly improve mobility and economic productivity in the country’s busiest city. He noted that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, requires continuous investment in modern transport systems to meet the demands of its growing population.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the Green Line Rail Project is a critical component of the state’s long-term transportation master plan. The rail line is expected to connect key parts of Lagos, easing traffic congestion and providing residents with a reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. According to him, the project will not only reduce travel time for commuters but also enhance connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial hubs.
The governor further highlighted the economic implications of the approval, stating that the project will create employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases. He added that improved transportation infrastructure would boost investor confidence, stimulate business activities, and contribute to overall economic growth in Lagos State.
He also commended the leadership of President Tinubu for recognising the importance of sustainable urban development and for prioritising projects that have a direct impact on the daily lives of citizens. Sanwo-Olu noted that the collaboration between the federal and state governments demonstrates a shared vision for national development and progress.
In addition, the governor reassured residents that the Lagos State Government is fully committed to ensuring the successful implementation of the project. He stated that necessary planning, coordination, and stakeholder engagement would be carried out to guarantee timely execution and maximum benefits for the public.
Sanwo-Olu urged Lagosians to remain supportive as the project progresses, noting that temporary inconveniences may arise during construction but will ultimately lead to long-term gains. He stressed that the Green Line Rail Project represents a step toward a more modern, efficient, and globally competitive Lagos.
Overall, the approval of Phase 1A marks a significant advancement in Lagos’ infrastructure journey, reinforcing the state’s ambition to build a sustainable and integrated transport system that meets the needs of its residents now and in the future.
