Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has joined prominent Nigerians in celebrating elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday anniversary. The Lagos governor described the centenarian as a symbol of integrity, wisdom, and selfless service whose life has greatly impacted Nigeria’s political and educational development.
In a congratulatory message released to mark the historic milestone, Sanwo-Olu praised Fasoranti for dedicating several decades of his life to public service, democratic ideals, and the advancement of the Yoruba nation. He noted that reaching the age of 100 in good health and honour is a rare blessing and a reflection of a life built on discipline, courage, and commitment to humanity.
The governor described the elder statesman as one of the respected disciples of late nationalist leader Chief Obafemi Awolowo, adding that Fasoranti has consistently upheld the values of progressive leadership, accountability, and social development throughout his career. According to Sanwo-Olu, the nonagenarian’s contributions to education and nation-building remain significant and continue to inspire younger generations across the country.
Sanwo-Olu recalled Fasoranti’s role in the education sector, particularly during his time as Commissioner for Finance in the old Western Region and later as Commissioner for Education in Ondo State. He said the elder statesman played a key role in promoting quality education and strengthening public institutions at a time when the region was recognized for progressive governance and human capital development.
The Lagos governor also commended Fasoranti for his steadfast advocacy for justice, equity, and national unity. He noted that despite political changes and national challenges over the decades, the Afenifere leader remained committed to speaking truth to power and defending democratic values peacefully and responsibly.
Sanwo-Olu further stated that Fasoranti’s life story serves as an important lesson for leaders and citizens alike, especially in a time when Nigeria continues to seek stronger institutions, ethical leadership, and national cohesion. He prayed for continued peace, good health, and divine grace for the elder statesman and his family.
The centenary celebration of Reuben Fasoranti attracted tributes from political leaders, traditional rulers, academics, and civil society groups across Nigeria, many of whom described him as one of the country’s most respected voices in public affairs. The occasion was widely seen as a celebration not only of longevity, but also of enduring leadership and service to society.
