The Lagos State Government has advised residents to report cases of unfair business practices, consumer exploitation, and unethical conduct to appropriate consumer protection agencies instead of making the police their first point of contact.
The government gave the advice while reiterating its commitment to protecting consumer rights and ensuring fair business practices across the state. It explained that consumer protection agencies are better equipped to handle disputes involving defective products, overpricing, false advertising, poor service delivery, and other forms of exploitation affecting consumers.
According to government officials, many consumer-related complaints can be resolved more effectively through regulatory agencies established to mediate disputes, enforce compliance, and protect the interests of residents. The state noted that involving the appropriate agencies would help ensure faster resolution of complaints while reducing unnecessary pressure on law enforcement authorities.
The government also emphasized the importance of public awareness on consumer rights, urging residents to be more informed and vigilant when engaging in commercial transactions. It encouraged consumers to keep receipts, agreements, and other evidence that may assist authorities in resolving disputes.
Officials stated that regulatory bodies and consumer protection agencies remain committed to investigating complaints and sanctioning businesses found guilty of unethical practices. They added that the state government would continue to strengthen mechanisms aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and fairness in the marketplace.
Residents were further encouraged to report incidents promptly through designated channels to enable swift intervention and prevent further exploitation.
