Lagos State has taken a significant step in its climate action journey following its official admission into the Under2 Coalition, one of the world’s largest networks of state and regional governments committed to achieving a net-zero emissions future.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development after signing a partnership agreement with the Climate Group during the ongoing London Climate Action Week 2026. The move places Lagos among more than 180 subnational governments across the globe working collectively to tackle climate change and promote sustainable development.
According to the governor, joining the coalition reflects Lagos State’s commitment to practical collaboration and innovative solutions in addressing environmental challenges. He noted that climate change is not a distant concern for Lagos but a daily reality, particularly as a coastal city vulnerable to rising sea levels, flooding, and other climate-related risks.
Sanwo-Olu explained that membership in the Under2 Coalition will provide Lagos with valuable opportunities to exchange knowledge, learn from successful climate initiatives in other major economies, and strengthen partnerships that can drive environmental sustainability. He added that the alliance will also help attract green investments needed to support the state’s transition toward a low-carbon economy.
The governor emphasized that the administration remains focused on implementing policies and projects that promote environmental resilience, clean energy adoption, and sustainable urban development. He noted that collaboration with global partners is essential in ensuring that Lagos continues to build a future that balances economic growth with environmental responsibility.
As discussions continue during London Climate Action Week 2026, Lagos is positioning itself as a leading African city in climate governance, demonstrating its readiness to contribute to global efforts aimed at combating climate change while creating a greener and more sustainable future for its residents.
