Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has launched the Lagos Climate Defence and Catalytic Fund (LCDC Fund), a landmark initiative aimed at attracting private sector investment and accelerating climate resilience projects across the state.
Speaking at the unveiling of the fund, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the initiative is designed to bridge the financing gap for climate action by mobilising private capital to support sustainable infrastructure, clean energy, flood control and other environmentally friendly projects.
He noted that Lagos, as one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, faces significant climate-related challenges, including flooding, coastal erosion and rising temperatures. According to the governor, addressing these challenges requires innovative financing models and stronger collaboration between the government, development partners and the private sector.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the Climate Defence and Catalytic Fund would serve as a strategic platform to de-risk investments, making it easier for private investors to participate in climate-focused projects that deliver both environmental and economic benefits.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a resilient and sustainable Lagos through policies that promote green growth, environmental protection and climate adaptation. He added that the initiative aligns with the state’s long-term development agenda and supports Nigeria’s broader climate commitments.
He called on financial institutions, investors, international organisations and development partners to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the fund to invest in projects that will improve livelihoods while protecting the environment.
Stakeholders at the launch described the initiative as a major step toward strengthening climate finance in Nigeria and positioning Lagos as a leading destination for sustainable investment in Africa.
The Climate Defence and Catalytic Fund is expected to support transformative projects that reduce climate risks, enhance infrastructure resilience, create green jobs and contribute to a more sustainable future for Lagos and the nation.
