Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has visited communities affected by the persistent heavy rainfall across the state, assuring residents that his administration is taking urgent steps to mitigate flooding and provide support to those impacted.
During the inspection tour, the governor assessed the extent of the flooding and interacted with residents whose homes, businesses and daily activities have been disrupted by the continuous downpour. He noted that the heavy rains had placed immense pressure on Lagos’ drainage infrastructure, particularly because the state is coastal and often experiences high tides and rising lagoon water levels that slow the discharge of floodwaters.
Sanwo-Olu, however, expressed concern over the widespread blockage of drainage channels by plastic waste, household refuse and banned Styrofoam products. According to him, indiscriminate waste disposal remains a major contributor to flooding in many parts of the state and must be addressed collectively.
The governor warned that anyone caught dumping refuse into drains or other unauthorized locations would face prosecution in accordance with existing environmental laws. He stressed that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility that requires the active cooperation of residents.
To reduce the impact of the flooding, Sanwo-Olu directed relevant government agencies to intensify drainage clearing operations across vulnerable locations while providing necessary support to affected communities. He assured Lagosians that the state government would continue to closely monitor flood-prone areas and respond promptly whenever the need arises.
The governor also appealed to residents to refrain from actions that obstruct drainage channels, especially during the rainy season. He emphasized that while the government remains committed to improving drainage infrastructure and responding to emergencies, public cooperation is essential to achieving lasting flood control and protecting lives and property across Lagos.
