Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has celebrated the establishment of a sister-state relationship between Lagos and California, describing the agreement as a significant milestone that will deepen cooperation and create new opportunities for people in both regions.
Sanwo-Olu made this known during a ceremony in Sacramento, California, where he joined leaders of the State of California, members of the California State Legislature and representatives of the Nigerian community to commemorate the new partnership.
The Governor said the agreement reflected the strong ties that already exist between Lagos and California, particularly through the large Nigerian community in the United States. He noted that many Nigerians living and working in California continue to maintain strong connections with Nigeria while contributing meaningfully to the development of their host community.
According to Sanwo-Olu, Lagos and California share several similarities, including their positions as major centres of business, technology, entertainment, creativity and innovation. He also highlighted their coastal connections as another area of common interest.
The Governor expressed optimism that the relationship would provide opportunities for both sides to exchange knowledge, expertise and ideas while developing partnerships capable of benefiting their people.
Sanwo-Olu also recognised Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in California, including California’s Transportation Secretary, Toks Omishakin, and former NBA champion Festus Ezeli. He said their achievements, alongside those of other Nigerians in California, demonstrated the important role people play in strengthening relations between Lagos and California.
The Governor commended Assemblymembers Matt Haney and Isaac Bryan for championing the resolution, as well as Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and others who contributed to making the partnership possible.
He expressed confidence that the new sister-state relationship would translate into practical opportunities and further strengthen the bond between Lagos and California.
