Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the dredging of 28 additional drainage channels across the state as part of efforts to improve flood control and reduce the impact of heavy rainfall on residents.
The approval followed an assessment of communities affected by recent downpours, during which the governor, accompanied by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat and other top government officials, inspected flood-prone areas and interacted with residents whose homes and businesses had been affected.
Sanwo-Olu said the decision to expand the state’s drainage intervention was aimed at strengthening flood management infrastructure and ensuring the free flow of stormwater, particularly during the peak of the rainy season. He noted that Lagos’ coastal location, coupled with rising lagoon water levels and high tides, often slows the discharge of floodwaters, making efficient drainage systems essential.
The governor directed the relevant agencies to begin work on the newly approved drainage channels immediately while intensifying the clearing of existing canals and waterways to prevent blockages. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive environmental and infrastructure measures.
Sanwo-Olu also renewed his appeal to residents to support government efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and refraining from dumping refuse into drains and canals. He warned that indiscriminate waste disposal remains one of the leading causes of flooding and that offenders would be prosecuted in accordance with environmental laws.
The governor assured Lagosians that the state government would continue to monitor vulnerable communities, respond swiftly to emergencies and invest in critical drainage infrastructure to improve resilience against flooding. He emphasized that while government would continue to expand drainage projects and other flood mitigation measures, public cooperation remains vital to achieving a cleaner, safer and more flood-resilient Lagos.
