Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated 44 chairmen of sports associations across the state, charging them to identify, nurture and develop sporting talents from the grassroots.
The Governor, who spoke during the inauguration, tasked the new sports association leaders with the responsibility of discovering promising athletes early, providing them with the necessary support and creating clear pathways for them to compete at local, national and international levels.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised that sports goes beyond competition, describing it as a powerful tool for creating opportunities in education, employment, entrepreneurship and economic development.
According to him, Lagos has a large pool of talented young people whose potential can be transformed into successful careers and championship victories if the right structures and opportunities are provided.
The Governor urged the newly inaugurated chairmen to prioritise grassroots sports development, transparency and accountability in the administration of their respective associations. He also called for the organisation of regular competitions to give athletes opportunities to develop their skills and gain competitive experience.
Sanwo-Olu further directed the sports leadership to ensure that women, girls, persons with disabilities and other emerging talents receive greater opportunities to participate and excel in sporting activities across the state.
He noted that developing a strong sports ecosystem requires deliberate investment in athletes, coaches, facilities and competitions, stressing that the state is committed to building systems capable of producing athletes who can compete successfully at the highest levels.
The Governor expressed confidence in the new leadership and charged them to justify the confidence placed in them by delivering measurable progress within their respective sports associations.
He said the administration would continue to support initiatives aimed at strengthening sports development and creating opportunities for young people.
Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about the future of sports in Lagos, stating that the state’s abundant talent, combined with effective systems and opportunities, can produce more champions who will bring pride to Lagos and Nigeria.
