Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on young African leaders to move beyond conversations and transform ideas, engagements and global connections into meaningful partnerships capable of driving development across the continent.
Sanwo-Olu made the call during his participation in the Lagos-New York 2026 Learning Journey, hosted by the Aliko Dangote Foundation in partnership with the Forum of Young Global Leaders.
The Governor visited the Dangote Refinery in Lekki as part of the learning journey, which provides an opportunity for emerging global leaders to gain first-hand insights into some of Africa’s major development and industrial projects.
Speaking to the Young Global Leaders preparing to travel to New York for the next phase of the programme, Sanwo-Olu stressed the importance of African leadership, innovation and collaboration in shaping the continent’s future.
He noted that Africa had already begun building solutions to its challenges and should not wait for external approval or permission before pursuing ambitious development initiatives.
According to him, the continent’s progress depends largely on its ability to strengthen partnerships, share knowledge and translate discussions into practical actions that deliver sustainable results.
“Africa is not waiting for permission to build. We have already started, and now is the time to turn conversations into partnerships,” the Governor said.
Sanwo-Olu’s participation in the learning journey also highlighted Lagos’ growing role as a centre for innovation, investment and industrial development, particularly through major projects such as the Dangote Refinery.
He encouraged the young leaders to use their experiences and networks to promote collaboration across sectors and borders, while championing solutions that can create opportunities for millions of Africans.
The Governor expressed optimism that the Lagos-New York initiative would further strengthen connections among emerging leaders and encourage a new generation committed to driving inclusive growth and development.
He urged the participants to return from the programme with ideas and partnerships that can contribute meaningfully to Africa’s economic transformation.
