Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned the Lagos Land Archive, described as the largest land information storage facility in West Africa, as part of activities marking Geographic Information System (GIS) Day.
The commissioning represents a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to preserve land records, modernise land administration and improve the efficiency of government processes through technology.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of the new facility in safeguarding Lagos’ land records and ensuring that critical information is properly preserved and easily accessible for administrative purposes.
He noted that the initiative was part of the state government’s broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at making governance more efficient, transparent and responsive to the needs of residents.
The Governor said Lagos was leveraging Geographic Information System technology and e-GIS automation to strengthen land administration while supporting smarter urban planning and infrastructure development across the state.
According to him, the adoption of digital systems would help government agencies make better-informed decisions by providing accurate and reliable land information for planning and development purposes.
The Lagos Land Archive is expected to play a key role in protecting historical land records while reducing dependence on traditional paper-based processes. The digital transformation of land administration is also expected to improve service delivery and make processes more convenient for residents and other stakeholders.
Sanwo-Olu stressed that technology remained essential to managing the growing needs of Lagos, particularly as the state continues to experience rapid population growth and urban expansion.
He said the government would continue to invest in innovative solutions that would strengthen institutions, improve administrative processes and enhance the quality of services available to Lagosians.
The Governor described the commissioning of the facility as another demonstration of Lagos State’s commitment to building a modern, technology-driven administration.
He reaffirmed the government’s determination to use digital tools to support sustainable development, efficient land management and better planning for the future of Lagos.
