Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has explored opportunities for collaboration with Google to improve maternal healthcare delivery and ensure pregnant women across the state have access to safe and timely medical services.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed this after receiving a delegation from Google, led by Olumide Balogun, Director for East and West Africa, at Lagos House, Marina. Discussions focused on how technology could support efforts to reduce maternal mortality and strengthen healthcare services across Lagos.
The governor noted that the state had made significant progress in reducing maternal deaths through investments in healthcare facilities, skilled birth attendance and emergency medical services.
He explained that the government had also identified districts with high maternal health burdens, monitored community-level challenges and improved referral pathways to help expectant mothers receive appropriate medical attention.
According to Sanwo-Olu, particular attention has been given to communities where pregnant women depend heavily on traditional birth attendants and may not have timely access to professional healthcare services.
He acknowledged, however, that more work was required to address existing gaps and ensure that maternal healthcare services reached every community across the state.
The governor emphasised the importance of partnerships with technology companies in identifying healthcare challenges early, improving planning and strengthening the delivery of essential medical services.
He expressed the state government’s willingness to collaborate with organisations capable of providing innovative technological solutions to improve healthcare outcomes and support evidence-based decision-making.
Sanwo-Olu added that the ultimate goal was to ensure that every pregnant woman, regardless of her location within Lagos, could access safe and timely care throughout pregnancy and childbirth.
The proposed collaboration reflects Lagos State’s continued interest in leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to strengthen its healthcare system, improve maternal health outcomes and reduce preventable deaths among mothers and newborns.
