The Campaign for Dignity Governance has commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for advancing climate-focused development policies following the launch of the Climate Investment Opportunities Diagnostic (CIOD) framework, a strategic move aimed at protecting Lagos’ coastal environment while unlocking sustainable economic opportunities.
As Africa’s fastest-growing coastal megacity, Lagos faces increasing environmental pressures from flooding, coastal erosion, and rising sea levels. The Sanwo-Olu administration’s climate investment plan seeks to respond to these challenges by aligning environmental protection with private-sector participation, climate finance, and long-term urban resilience strategies.
The CIOD framework outlines pathways for investing in nature-based solutions, climate-resilient infrastructure, renewable energy projects, and sustainable urban planning. It also prioritises the protection of vulnerable coastal communities in areas such as Lekki, Ajah, Badagry, Ibeju-Lekki, and parts of Lagos Island, where climate risks directly affect livelihoods and housing.
State officials have described the initiative as a proactive step toward positioning Lagos as a regional leader in climate-smart development, capable of attracting international partnerships while safeguarding the environment for future generations.
Commenting on the initiative, Razaq Olokoba, Convener of the Campaign for Dignity Governance, described the climate investment plan as timely and forward-looking.
“This climate investment framework demonstrates leadership that recognises the connection between environmental sustainability and economic stability. Protecting coastal communities while attracting responsible investment is essential for the future of Lagos,” he said.
He added that community engagement and transparent implementation would be key to ensuring the policy delivers measurable impact across affected areas.
Why This Matters
• Climate-resilient planning helps protect lives, homes, and businesses
• Green investments can generate jobs and attract international funding
• Coastal protection strengthens Lagos’ long-term economic stability
The Campaign for Dignity Governance encouraged collaboration between government, private investors, and local communities to ensure the climate strategy translates into tangible benefits for residents most exposed to environmental risks.
