The Campaign for Dignity Governance (CDG) has commended the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for taking decisive steps towards addressing the persistent flooding challenges affecting parts of Lagos State through the ongoing review of the Lekki Master Plan and the inspection of flood-prone communities across the Lekki-Epe corridor.
The organization described the Governor’s recent intervention as one of the most courageous and people-oriented decisions of his administration, noting that it demonstrates responsible leadership, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to protecting lives, properties, and investments across Lagos State.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Razaq Olokoba, the group stated that leadership is often measured not by how governments respond during moments of comfort but by the difficult decisions they are willing to take during periods of challenge.
According to the organization, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s recent inspection tour of flood-affected communities, including Ogombo, Sangotedo, Chevron Drive, Ajiran, Awoyaya, and other areas within the Lekki axis, reflects a leader who is not only willing to listen to the concerns of citizens but also committed to implementing practical and long-term solutions.
“The easy thing for any government would have been to offer temporary solutions and move on. However, Governor Sanwo-Olu has demonstrated that sustainable development requires difficult but necessary decisions. The decision to review existing master plans to address environmental infractions and strengthen urban planning is a bold demonstration of leadership,” Olokoba stated.
The Campaign for Dignity Governance noted that Lagos continues to experience rapid population growth, urban expansion, and increased pressure on existing infrastructure. Consequently, sustainable urban planning remains one of the most important responsibilities of government.
According to the organization, the Greater Lagos vision cannot be achieved without effective environmental management, proper physical planning, and strategic investments designed to protect both present and future generations.
The group particularly praised Governor Sanwo-Olu’s emphasis on restoring the integrity of natural waterways and drainage channels across the affected communities.
“It takes courage for leaders to prioritize the future over political convenience. Flooding is not merely an environmental challenge; it is an economic challenge, a public health challenge, and a developmental challenge. Addressing it effectively requires leadership that is proactive rather than reactive.”
The organization further observed that Lagos occupies a unique position as Nigeria’s commercial capital and one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities. Consequently, strategic urban planning must remain central to its developmental aspirations.
The Campaign for Dignity Governance believes that the review of the Lekki Master Plan represents far more than an environmental intervention. It is an investment in public safety, sustainable development, investor confidence, and economic stability.
According to the group, every responsible government must occasionally make difficult decisions that secure long-term prosperity for its people.
“Governor Sanwo-Olu has once again demonstrated that development must never come at the expense of sustainability. His administration continues to show that planning for tomorrow is one of the greatest responsibilities of leadership today.”
The organization further commended members of the Lagos State Executive Council and relevant government agencies working tirelessly to implement policies aimed at making Lagos safer, cleaner, and more resilient.
As Lagos continues its journey towards becoming one of the world’s leading megacities, the Campaign for Dignity Governance expressed confidence that strategic interventions such as these will contribute significantly to achieving that vision.
The group reaffirmed its support for policies that promote sustainable development, environmental protection, economic growth, and improved quality of life for residents.
“Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu continues to demonstrate that true leadership is about making decisions that will benefit generations yet unborn. The people of Lagos deserve sustainable solutions, and we commend him for remaining committed to building a safer, stronger, and greater Lagos.”
