Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially declared open the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships, describing the event as an important platform for athletes across the Commonwealth to compete, connect and showcase their skills.
The championship was declared open at Rugby School, Eko Atlantic City, where athletes, officials, coaches and members of the fencing community gathered for the prestigious competition.
Sanwo-Olu expressed delight at the opportunity to welcome athletes from different Commonwealth countries to Lagos, noting that the championship further demonstrates the State’s growing capacity to host major international sporting events.
He commended the athletes for their dedication to fencing, a sport that requires discipline, precision, agility, concentration and exceptional technical ability. According to him, bringing athletes together in Lagos provides an opportunity for participants to demonstrate these qualities while competing at the highest level.
The Governor said Lagos was proud to host the fencing community and expressed optimism that the championship would deliver an exciting and memorable experience for athletes, officials and spectators.
He also noted that events of this nature contribute to the development of sports in the State by exposing young people to different sporting disciplines and creating opportunities for athletes to compete on an international stage.
The 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth to compete in various fencing events, providing a platform for participants to demonstrate their abilities and pursue sporting excellence.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to supporting sporting activities and creating an environment capable of attracting major international competitions.
