Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on Wednesday received a delegation from the National Sports Commission (NSC) led by its Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, as preparations continue for the maiden edition of the 2026 National Intermediate Games (NIG).
The delegation, comprising members of the Main Organising Committee (MOC) of the championship, paid a courtesy visit to the governor to brief him on ongoing plans for the competition and to strengthen collaboration between the NSC and the Lagos State Government.
The visit comes as Lagos officially inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC), a major step towards ensuring the successful hosting of the national sporting event. The National Intermediate Games is designed to serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing young sporting talents across the country while promoting grassroots sports development.
Speaking during the meeting, Olopade commended the Lagos State Government for its commitment to sports development and youth empowerment. He expressed confidence in the state’s capacity to host a world-class tournament, citing its track record in successfully organising major sporting events and providing quality infrastructure.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s support for initiatives that encourage youth participation in sports and contribute to talent discovery. He noted that sports remain a powerful tool for promoting unity, discipline and economic opportunities among young people.
The governor also pledged the state’s cooperation with the organisers to ensure that the maiden edition of the National Intermediate Games achieves its objectives and sets a strong foundation for future editions.
The 2026 National Intermediate Games is expected to attract athletes, coaches and officials from across Nigeria, providing a competitive platform for emerging talents and reinforcing the country’s efforts to strengthen its sports development framework.
