The Lagos State House of Assembly has commenced consideration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s request for approval to raise a N200 billion bond aimed at financing critical infrastructure projects and other development initiatives across the state.
The proposal was referred to the Joint Committee on Economic Planning and Budget and the Committee on Finance for detailed scrutiny following a directive by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, during plenary on Tuesday.
The committees are expected to submit their reports to the Assembly today after examining the governor’s request and assessing the proposed financing plan.
The bond request, transmitted to the House through the Commissioner for Finance, forms part of the Lagos State Government’s strategy to mobilise funds for key infrastructure investments and other priority projects designed to support economic growth and improve public services.
Lawmakers are expected to evaluate the borrowing proposal to ensure it aligns with the state’s fiscal policies, debt sustainability framework, and long-term development objectives before making a recommendation to the full House.
If approved, the N200 billion bond will provide additional funding for infrastructure development, including projects aimed at improving transportation, public facilities, and other essential sectors that support the state’s expanding population and economy.
The Assembly’s consideration of the request underscores its constitutional responsibility to oversee government borrowing and ensure that such financial commitments serve the overall interest of Lagos residents.
The outcome of the committee’s report will determine the next stage of legislative action on the governor’s proposal, with members of the House expected to deliberate on the recommendations before taking a final decision on the bond approval.
The planned financing is part of the state government’s broader efforts to sustain infrastructure development and maintain Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s commercial and economic hub.
