Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has outlined ongoing efforts by his administration to address the persistent flooding affecting parts of the state, assuring residents that the government is implementing both immediate and long-term solutions to reduce the impact of heavy rainfall.
Speaking during a recent interview, the governor acknowledged the challenges posed by flooding, particularly during the peak of the rainy season, and stressed that the state government remains committed to protecting lives, property, and critical infrastructure.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the government has intensified the clearing and maintenance of drainage channels, expanded drainage networks in flood-prone communities, and continued the dredging of canals to improve the free flow of stormwater across the state.
He also noted that major infrastructure projects are being executed to strengthen Lagos’ flood control system, while urban planning measures are being enhanced to ensure sustainable development. According to the governor, these interventions are designed not only to address current flooding but also to improve the state’s resilience against the effects of climate change.
The governor urged residents to support the government’s efforts by avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal and refraining from activities that obstruct drainage channels and waterways. He said blocked drains remain a major contributor to flooding in many parts of the state, adding that public cooperation is essential to achieving lasting results.
Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in resilient infrastructure and environmental management, noting that flood mitigation requires a collective effort between the government and residents.
He assured Lagosians that the state would continue to strengthen its emergency response systems while implementing projects aimed at reducing flood risks and safeguarding communities.
The governor reiterated that despite the challenges associated with rapid urbanisation and changing weather patterns, his administration remains focused on building a safer, cleaner, and more climate-resilient Lagos through sustained investment in infrastructure and proactive environmental management.
