Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the COVID-19 pandemic and the #EndSARS protests as the most challenging moments of his administration, saying the two crises tested his leadership and strengthened his resolve to serve the people with courage and resilience.
Speaking on Sunday, the governor reflected on the unprecedented events, noting that both the global health emergency and the civil unrest demanded difficult decisions under intense pressure. He said the experiences shaped his approach to governance and reinforced the importance of remaining calm, seeking wise counsel, and prioritising the welfare of residents.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the COVID-19 pandemic required swift and coordinated action to protect lives while ensuring the state’s economy remained functional. According to him, the government worked closely with health experts, security agencies, and development partners to contain the spread of the virus and provide support for vulnerable residents.
The governor also recalled the #EndSARS protests, describing the period as one of the most emotional and defining moments of his tenure. He said the demonstrations highlighted the need for continuous engagement with young people and responsive leadership while acknowledging the pain and challenges experienced during the crisis.
Sanwo-Olu noted that the lessons learned from both events have influenced his administration’s policies and strengthened its commitment to building a more resilient Lagos. He stressed that leadership is often defined by how challenges are managed, rather than by periods of stability.
The governor expressed appreciation to Lagos residents, frontline workers, security personnel, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and other stakeholders for their support during the difficult periods. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering good governance, improving public service, and ensuring that Lagos remains prepared to respond effectively to future challenges.
