The Campaign for Dignity in Governance (CDG) has commended the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for his unwavering and consistent advocacy for the granting of a Special Federal Status to Lagos State, describing the call as legitimate, patriotic, and necessary for the continued economic growth and development of Nigeria.
The group stated that Governor Sanwo-Olu has once again demonstrated courageous and visionary leadership by renewing his appeal to the Federal Government to recognise the unique responsibilities Lagos continues to shoulder as Nigeria’s commercial and economic capital more than three decades after the nation’s capital was moved to Abuja.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Razaq Olokoba, the organisation noted that the Governor’s position goes beyond politics and reflects a genuine concern for sustainable development, infrastructure expansion, and improved service delivery for millions of Nigerians who depend daily on Lagos for economic opportunities and social services.
According to Olokoba, Lagos remains unlike any other state in the federation. It continues to serve as Nigeria’s economic heartbeat, contributing significantly to the nation’s economy while accommodating millions of residents, businesses, investors, and visitors from across the country and beyond.
“The demand for a Special Federal Status for Lagos is not a favour being requested by Governor Sanwo-Olu. It is a legitimate aspiration founded on economic realities, demographic realities, and the enormous national responsibilities Lagos continues to carry on behalf of Nigeria,” the statement read.
The organisation noted that Lagos provides infrastructure and services that extend far beyond its geographical boundaries. Its roads, healthcare institutions, transportation systems, educational facilities, security architecture, and economic infrastructure serve not only Lagosians but millions of Nigerians from different states who live, work, and conduct business within the state.
According to the Campaign for Dignity in Governance, rapid urbanisation and continuous population growth have significantly increased pressure on public infrastructure and essential services, thereby making additional federal support both reasonable and necessary.
“Every day, Lagos welcomes thousands of Nigerians in search of opportunities and better livelihoods. The state has continued to accommodate this enormous responsibility with remarkable resilience and strategic planning. However, sustainable development requires adequate support from the Federal Government considering Lagos’ unique position within the Nigerian federation,” Olokoba stated.
The organisation further observed that successive administrations in Lagos have canvassed the need for Special Federal Status, noting that Governor Sanwo-Olu deserves commendation for remaining consistent and unapologetic in advocating for what is in the best interest of both Lagos State and Nigeria.
According to the statement, leadership requires consistency, particularly on issues of strategic national importance.
“The Governor deserves commendation for refusing to abandon this important conversation. True leadership is often demonstrated by consistency of purpose and the courage to continue advocating for policies that may not produce immediate political gains but will undoubtedly benefit future generations.”
The Campaign for Dignity in Governance noted that granting Lagos Special Federal Status would strengthen infrastructure development, improve transportation systems, expand healthcare delivery, enhance environmental sustainability initiatives, improve public safety, and further consolidate Lagos’ position as one of Africa’s leading economic centres.
The group added that the economic prosperity of Lagos remains intrinsically connected to Nigeria’s economic success, stressing that investments in Lagos ultimately translate into broader national economic benefits.
“Supporting Lagos is ultimately supporting Nigeria. When Lagos succeeds, businesses grow, investments increase, opportunities expand, and millions of Nigerians benefit directly and indirectly from that success.”
The organisation also described Governor Sanwo-Olu’s advocacy as one that may become one of the defining legacies of his administration should it eventually materialise.
According to Olokoba, some of history’s most significant achievements began as difficult conversations championed consistently by visionary leaders who understood the importance of planning beyond their tenure in office.
“It will undoubtedly become one of the most enduring and unforgettable legacies of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu if future generations of Lagosians benefit from the realisation of this noble aspiration. His consistency on this matter deserves commendation because he understands that leadership is ultimately about securing tomorrow while serving today.”
The Campaign for Dignity in Governance therefore called on relevant stakeholders across the public and private sectors to support constructive conversations surrounding Special Federal Status for Lagos State, noting that such discussions must be approached from the perspective of national development and economic sustainability rather than partisan considerations.
The organisation reaffirmed its support for policies and initiatives that strengthen institutions, promote economic growth, and improve the quality of life of citizens.
“We commend Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his steadfast commitment to this noble cause. The call for Special Federal Status for Lagos is both legitimate and necessary.
