The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the regulation of Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and improving waste collection, transportation and disposal across the State.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Wednesday during a meeting with the executive members of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAMN).
The meeting formed part of the State Government’s ongoing efforts to address operational challenges within the waste management sector and develop more effective strategies for ensuring a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
Wahab said the government remained focused on improving the efficiency of waste management operations while strengthening collaboration with stakeholders across the sector.
He noted that effective waste management required continuous engagement between government agencies and operators, particularly in identifying challenges and developing practical solutions that would benefit residents across the State.
The meeting provided an avenue for both parties to review developments across the waste management value chain, with particular attention given to the condition of dumpsites and operational difficulties confronting PSP operators.
Discussions also focused on measures to improve the collection and transportation of waste, enhance disposal processes and reduce the turnaround time required for operators to discharge collected waste.
The Commissioner emphasised the importance of stronger regulation and compliance, noting that operators must continue to work within established guidelines to ensure efficient service delivery and maintain environmental standards across Lagos.
The engagement with AWAMN also underscored the State Government’s willingness to collaborate with private waste managers in tackling emerging challenges within the sector.
The government stressed that a coordinated approach involving regulators, waste managers and other stakeholders was essential to achieving a more efficient and sustainable waste management system.
The State Government reaffirmed that its efforts would continue to focus on improving operational efficiency, strengthening regulatory oversight and ensuring that waste is properly collected, transported and disposed of.
The engagement is expected to further strengthen cooperation between the government and waste management operators as Lagos intensifies efforts to improve environmental cleanliness and protect public health across the State.
