The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has commenced a pre-festive cleaning operation in Ikoyi as part of efforts to improve environmental sanitation and prepare the area for increased activities during the festive season.
The exercise is part of the Authority’s wider programme to intensify waste management and environmental sanitation operations across strategic locations in Lagos ahead of the festive period.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gadegesin, disclosed this on Wednesday, noting that the operation was designed to ensure that key areas across the state remain clean and environmentally safe as activities increase during the festive season.
According to him, the cleaning operation commenced with comprehensive desilting and clearing of drainage channels along the Bourdillon, Alexander and Gerrard corridors in Ikoyi.
The exercise involved the removal of accumulated silt, waste and other materials obstructing the free flow of water through the drainage channels. The intervention is expected to improve drainage capacity and contribute to a cleaner environment within the area.
Gadegesin said LAWMA would continue to strengthen its environmental sanitation activities in different parts of Lagos as part of measures to maintain the cleanliness and overall appearance of the state.
He urged residents, businesses and other stakeholders to support the Authority’s efforts by properly disposing of their waste and avoiding activities that could obstruct drainage channels.
The LAWMA chief stressed the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean and sustainable environment, particularly during periods when population movement and commercial activities increase.
The pre-festive operation in Ikoyi is expected to form part of broader sanitation activities across strategic locations in Lagos as the state prepares for the festive season.
The Authority also reiterated the need for residents to comply with environmental sanitation regulations and support ongoing efforts to keep public spaces, roads and drainage infrastructure free from waste.
LAWMA said it would sustain its operations across the state to ensure that Lagos remains clean and environmentally friendly throughout the festive period and beyond.
