Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military veterans and the widows of fallen heroes, as the state marked the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.
The governor made the pledge on Wednesday during the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day parade and wreath-laying ceremony held at the Remembrance Arcade, Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos. He was represented at the event by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
Governor Sanwo-Olu described the remembrance ceremony as a solemn and significant occasion dedicated to honouring the bravery, patriotism, and sacrifices of officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces who paid the ultimate price in the defence of the nation. He noted that the day also provides an opportunity to pray for fallen heroes, reflect on their contributions, and encourage those currently serving in the Armed Forces.
According to the governor, the peace, unity, and freedoms enjoyed by Nigerians today were earned through the selfless sacrifices of military personnel who stood firm in the face of danger to protect the country’s sovereignty. He stressed that their courage must never be forgotten and should continue to inspire future generations.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that his administration remains committed to ensuring that veterans and families of fallen soldiers are adequately supported. He assured that Lagos State would continue to explore ways to enhance welfare packages, provide social support, and improve the quality of life for military veterans and widows in recognition of their sacrifices.
The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths by government officials, military leaders, and representatives of security agencies, followed by prayers for national peace, unity, and the continued strength of the Armed Forces.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also called on Nigerians to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and selflessness demonstrated by the Armed Forces, noting that collective responsibility is essential to building a secure, peaceful, and prosperous nation.
The event concluded with a military parade and the sounding of the Last Post, symbolizing honour and respect for Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
